About this hash generator
A hash is a short code made from your text or file. The same words always give the same code. Change one letter and the code looks completely different. You cannot turn the code back into the original words.
MD5 is the short old code. SHA-256 is the one most sites ask for now. SHA-1 is older. SHA-512 is longer.
People use this to check that two files or two texts are the same: if the codes match, the content matches. Everything stays in this tab. A file you pick is not uploaded.

How to make an MD5 or SHA hash

Frequently asked questions
Is the text or file uploaded or stored?
No. Your browser makes the codes on this page. Close the tab and it is gone. There is no account and no copy on a server.
Can I get the original text back from a hash?
No. The code only goes one way. Same words always give the same code, but the code is not the words and cannot be turned back.
Is a hash encryption? Can it hide a password?
No. This is not a way to hide a password. Anyone with the original text can make the same code. Do not paste a password you actually use.
MD5 or SHA-256 — which one?
Use the one you were asked for. If nobody said, pick SHA-256. MD5 is shorter and older; people still use it to see if two files are the same.
