When you need a fuel-economy converter
In Europe fuel use is written as liters per 100 km. In the US it is miles per gallon. Type the number from the brochure or the dashboard and pick the unit. The table shows L/100 km, km/L, US mpg and UK mpg.
Liters per 100 km is how much fuel you burn on 100 km: smaller is more economical. Miles per gallon is how far you go on one gallon: larger is more economical. A US gallon is smaller than a UK gallon, so US mpg is a smaller number for the same car.

L/100 km and mpg are inverses: mpg US ≈ 235.2 ÷ (L/100 km). You do not need the formula to use the table.

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert L/100 km to mpg?
Divide 235.2 by the L/100 km figure for US mpg, or 282.5 for UK mpg. 6.5 L/100 km is about 36.2 mpg US. The table does it as you type.
Why are US mpg and UK mpg different?
The gallons differ. A US gallon is 3.785 L, a UK (imperial) gallon is 4.546 L. The same car therefore shows a higher mpg UK than mpg US.
Is lower L/100 km better?
Yes. Liters per 100 km is fuel used — smaller means more economical. Miles per gallon is the other way: higher is better.
