About this VAT calculator

Value-added tax (VAT, IVA, TVA, PPN, НДС) is either added to a net price or already included in a shelf price. This calculator does both, at any percentage, in any currency — it does not pick a symbol.

Quick buttons cover common European standard rates. The country table is a snapshot of standard rates in 2026; reduced rates differ by product and they change. This is not tax advice. For U.S. state sales tax, use a dedicated sales-tax tool.

Add vs extract

To add VAT: multiply the net by (1 + rate ÷ 100). VAT is gross minus net. Example: 100 at 21% → gross 121, VAT 21.

To extract VAT from a price that already includes it: divide gross by (1 + rate ÷ 100). 121 at 21% → net 100, not 121 × 21%. That mistake overstates the tax.

Gross = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100)
Net = gross ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)

How to calculate VAT

  1. Choose add or extract: Add if you have a price without tax. Extract if the amount on the receipt already includes VAT.
  2. Enter amount and rate: Type any rate, or tap a common one (9–23%). Currency does not matter.
  3. Read net, VAT and gross: The three figures update as you type.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add VAT to a net price?

Multiply the net by (1 + rate ÷ 100). At 20%, 50 becomes 60. The VAT amount is 10.

How do I take VAT out of a gross price?

Divide the gross by (1 + rate ÷ 100). At 20%, 120 ÷ 1.20 = 100 net, VAT 20. Do not multiply the gross by 20% — that would give 24, which is wrong.

Why is extracted VAT less than rate × gross?

Because the rate applies to the net, not the shelf price. The tax is already inside the gross, so you divide rather than multiply.

Are the country rates official?

They are a 2026 snapshot of standard rates for orientation. Governments change rates and use reduced bands. Confirm with the tax authority. This page is not tax advice.
