About this sales tax calculator
The United States has no federal sales tax: each state sets its own rate, and counties and cities may add local taxes on top. That is why the same purchase costs different amounts in different towns. This calculator applies the 2026 statewide rate for the state you pick, plus any local add-on you enter, and returns the tax amount and the total price.
Five states — Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon — have no statewide sales tax. At the other end, California's base rate is 7.25% and some cities in Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana and Kansas stack local taxes above 11%. The table below lists every state's 2026 base rate and the maximum combined rate found in that state.
How sales tax is calculated
Sales tax is a simple percentage of the pre-tax price. The combined rate is the state rate plus local add-ons, and the tax is the price times that rate.
Example: a $120 purchase in California with a 2.5% local add-on is taxed at 7.25% + 2.5% = 9.75%: tax = $120 × 0.0975 = $11.70, total $131.70.

FAQ
Which state has the highest sales tax?
California has the highest statewide base rate at 7.25%. Once local taxes are included, individual cities in Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana and Kansas reach the highest combined rates in the country — above 11%.
Which states have no sales tax?
Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no statewide sales tax and no local sales taxes. Alaska has no state rate but allows local sales taxes, up to about 7.5% in some communities.
What is the difference between state and combined rate?
The state rate is set by the state. The combined rate adds county and city taxes on top. Colorado's state rate is only 2.9%, but Denver's combined rate is close to 9% because of local add-ons.
Is sales tax charged on online purchases?
Usually yes. Since the 2018 Wayfair decision, online sellers collect sales tax at the combined rate of the delivery address in most states, so the rate that applies is your home address's rate.
