About this weighted grade calculator
Almost every U.S. syllabus breaks the course grade into weighted categories: homework might be worth 20%, quizzes 15%, midterm 25% and the final exam 40%. A simple average of your scores would give the wrong answer — each category has to count exactly as much as the syllabus says.
This calculator does the weighted math for you. Create a row for each category, enter the percentage score you have earned in it and its weight, and you will instantly see your overall class grade, the matching letter grade and its 4.0-scale value.
The tool watches your weights too: if they don't add up to 100%, you'll see a warning and the result will be normalized, so a missing category never silently skews your grade.
How the weighted grade formula works
Multiply each category score by its weight, add the results, then divide by the total weight. When the weights sum to 100% (as they should per your syllabus), the division is by 100.
Example: Homework 92% × 0.20 = 18.4; Midterm 87% × 0.30 = 26.1; Final 85% × 0.50 = 42.5. Overall = 18.4 + 26.1 + 42.5 = 87% → letter B+, worth 3.3 on the 4.0 scale.

How to calculate your class grade
- Create a row per category: List each grade category from your syllabus — homework, quizzes, labs, midterm, final — one row per category.
- Enter scores and weights: Type the percentage you have earned in each category and its weight from the syllabus. Keep the total weight at 100%.
- Read your overall grade: The overall percentage, letter grade and 4.0-scale value update as you type, so you can forecast scenarios by changing any score.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my weighted grade?
Multiply each category score by its weight, add everything up, and divide by the sum of the weights. For example, homework 90% at 30% weight plus exams 80% at 70% weight gives 90 × 0.3 + 80 × 0.7 = 83% overall.
What letter grade is an 87 percent?
On the standard U.S. scale, 87% is a B+ (87–89%), worth 3.3 points on the 4.0 scale. Some schools use slightly different cutoffs, so check your syllabus — but this table matches the most common college and high school ranges.
My category weights don't add up to 100 — what do I do?
Either a category is missing or a weight is mistyped. The calculator still shows a normalized result so you can keep working, but fix the weights to match your syllabus — grades are only exact when the weights sum to 100%.
What is the difference between a grade calculator and a GPA calculator?
This tool works inside one class: it combines categories (homework, tests, final) into a single course grade. A GPA calculator works across classes: it takes the final letter grade of each course, weighted by credit hours, to produce your overall GPA.
