About this attendance calculator
Many colleges and universities — especially across India, where the 75% rule is a formal regulation, but also institutions in the Middle East, Africa and parts of Europe — require a minimum attendance percentage, usually 75% or 80%, to stay eligible for final exams. This calculator answers the two questions every student asks: "How many classes can I still skip?" and, if you are below the line, "How many classes must I attend in a row to recover?"
Enter the number of classes held so far, how many you attended, and your institution's required percentage. The tool instantly shows your current attendance, the number of future classes you can safely miss, or the recovery streak you need if you are already short.
The math is exact, not an estimate: it solves the attendance inequality for the next class, so the numbers stay correct whether you are at 12 out of 15 or 87 out of 140.
The attendance formulas
Current attendance = classes attended ÷ classes held × 100.
If you are above the requirement, the number of classes you can still skip is the largest k where attended ÷ (held + k) is still at least the requirement: k = floor(attended × 100 ÷ requirement − held).
If you are below it, the consecutive classes n you must attend satisfy (attended + n) ÷ (held + n) ≥ requirement ÷ 100, which gives n = ceil((requirement × held − 100 × attended) ÷ (100 − requirement)).
Example: 48 attended out of 60 held with a 75% rule → you are at 80% and can safely skip floor(48 × 100 ÷ 75 − 60) = 4 more classes.
Quick reference: classes needed for 75%
| Classes held | Needed for 75% | Can miss (if at 100%) |
|---|---|---|
| 60 | 45 | 15 |
| 80 | 60 | 20 |
| 100 | 75 | 25 |
| 120 | 90 | 30 |
| 140 | 105 | 35 |
| 160 | 120 | 40 |
How to check your attendance
- Enter classes held: Total classes conducted in the subject so far (check your timetable or course portal).
- Enter classes attended: How many of those you were present for.
- Set the requirement: Leave 75% for the standard rule, or type your institution's threshold. The result shows your safe-skip count or the recovery streak needed.
Frequently asked questions
What is the 75% attendance rule?
It is a regulation used by many universities (notably under India's UGC framework, and similar rules in other countries) requiring students to attend at least 75% of classes in each subject to be eligible to sit the final exam. Some institutions use 80%, and a few grant condonation for medical reasons — check your own handbook.
How many classes can I miss and still keep 75%?
It depends on how many classes have been held. After 60 classes at perfect attendance you can miss 15 and stay exactly at 75%; after 100 classes, 25. The calculator above computes the exact number for your situation — including cases where you have already missed classes.
What happens if my attendance is below 75%?
Policies vary, but commonly you lose exam eligibility for that subject unless you recover the percentage before the cutoff date, get medical condonation, or repeat the course. This calculator tells you exactly how many consecutive classes you need to attend to climb back — start the streak as early as possible because the required number grows every time you miss.
Does attendance count per subject or overall?
Almost always per subject: you need 75% in each course separately, not on average across the semester. Run this calculator once per subject, or add the numbers subject by subject.
